How to run your first user import

To be able to import users into Dado, you'll first need to set up an Import Source. This can be a Google Sheet, an Airtable, or your HRIS.

After doing this set-up, you're ready to pull data into Dado. Here's how to do that:

  1. In the Users tab, click on 'User Imports' in the left-hand navigation
  2. Click on the 'Import now' button at the top right. This will pull data from your Import Source, which you can see as a pending import in the central section. No changes will be made to the data in Dado until you approve this pending import.

If you see "Error" rather than "Pending" in the status column, take a look at our advice on diagnosing and resolving errors.

  3. Click on this import to review and approve the changes it contains.
    • 'New users' section: this will show you any users found in your data source who don't yet exist in Dado. If you 'Apply' this import, these users will be created.
    • 'Changed users' section: if this isn't your first import, you may see some users here with updated data. Users appear here when the data Dado holds about them doesn't match what's in your Import Source. If you 'Apply' this import, the data for these users will be updated to match the Import Source
    • 'Effects' section: the creation of new users or changed data for existing users can trigger a number of 'effects' in your Experiences. These are shown as suggestions that you can reject or approve. Effects include:
      • enrolling a new user with an upcoming first day into your Onboarding Experience.
      • if an existing user's Manager has changed in your Import Source, updating their in-progress Experience to reflect this change of Manager
      • if an existing user's start-date has changed in your Import Source, updating their in-progress Experience to reflect this new start-date. This would include automatically moving Tasks, Messages and Automations to correspond to the new start-date.

    • 'Problems' section: here is where Dado identifies any issues with the data in your Import Source. Problems could include not having an email or start-date for a new user.
  4. Once you have reviewed the New/Changed users and approved or rejected all the Effects, you're ready to apply this import. Click the 'Apply changes' button to do this.
  5. You can now click on 'User List' in the left hand navigation to see the new users you've imported.
