Setting up an import source to pull data into Dado
Once you've set up an integration to a system holding employee data, your next step is to specify exactly which data you'd like to import from that system into Dado.
You do this by setting up an import source. Once you've set up your import source, you're ready to run your first import.
It's easy to change import sources once they've been set up, to import more data or less data into Dado.
You can have as many import sources as you like. There is no restriction on the number of import sources at any Dado subscription level.

How to set up a new import source
Setting up a Google Sheet/Excel Online Workbook as an import source has a slightly different process. See our specific instructions on importing users from an Excel Online or Google Spreadsheet
Setting up Workday also requires a few extra steps. Please contact your Dado Customer Success Manager to guide you through (rather than following the instructions below).
- Start by deciding which data you would like to import into Dado. Look through the data available in the source system (eg your HRIS or ATS) and consider what you will need to personalize and tailor experiences in Dado
- You will always need to include an email address (either work or personal)
- It's also best to include a name field
- You might also consider including:
- Manager (we will need an email address of ID for managers, rather than just a name)
- Job Title, Team, Department
- Location, whether that's the office or their city/state/country of residence
- Employment type (eg full time, intern, contractor)
- First and last days at work
- Create any custom fields you need to store these data points in Dado. Dado includes default fields for many of the things listed above – but if you're importing other things, you'll likely need to create a custom field.
- Go to the Employees > Import Sources page in your Dado account.
- If you do not have access to this page, ask a colleague with a higher level of Dado permissions to either grant you extra permissions; or do this for you.
Click on the blue "Add new import source" button in the top right
- A new window will appear offering you a choice of systems to import from. Click the system you'd like to import from.
- Please note: the process of setting up a Google Sheet or Excel Online Workbook as an import source is slightly different. Follow the instructions in our article on importing users from an Excel Online or Google Sheet
Setting up Workday also requires a few extra steps. Please contact your Dado Customer Success Manager to guide you through.
- You'll now see a window that lets you configure the Default Field Mapping for this import source. These field mappings determine which data points from this system get imported into which Dado fields.
- Add mappings for all the data points you want to import
- In the left hand column: select the field in the source system. Depending on the system you will either be able to select from a dropdown; or type the field name.
In the right hand column: select the field in Dado where you'd like that data to live
There are restrictions on what data can be pulled into Dado for some import sources.
For any integration listed as Basic: only a standard list of commonly used fields can be imported into Dado. This excludes any custom fields you might have added to this system. If you need something that's not listed, please contact the Dado team.
For ATS integrations: typically, Dado will only be able to import datapoints about the candidate and the offer.
- It's easy to update these field mappings in future, so don't worry if you have to make a change later on! See instructions below for updating import sources.
- When you're done, click "Add source".
You're now ready to run an import, which will pull data in from this import source – or to add another import source.
How to update an existing import source
If you need to import some extra data into Dado from an import source; or no longer need some of the data points you've previously imported into Dado, you can easily update the Field Mappings of your import source.
- Go to the Employees > Import Sources page in your Dado account.
- If you do not have access to this page, ask a colleague with a higher level of Dado permissions to either grant you extra permissions; or do this for you.
Click on the name of the import source you want to update. This will open up the field mappings.
- If you want to import extra data into Dado: click the "Add field" button to add a new field mapping
- If you want to stop importing a data point into Dado: click the little x at the right-hand end of the row
- Once you've finished making your updates, click Save changes at the bottom right.

Fields marked as private or confidential in source systems will often not be available to Dado. Sometimes these fields can be added as field mappings; but none of the data in those fields is visible to Dado.
How to remove an existing import source
You can easily remove an import source if you no longer need it. Removing import sources is permanent: there is no way to 'undelete' them.
If you remove an import source and later need to re-add it, you will need to set up the Field Mappings again from scratch. If you think you'll need to do this, we suggest taking a screenshot of the existing field mappings before you delete.
- Go to the Employees > Import Sources page in your Dado account.
- If you do not have access to this page, ask a colleague with a higher level of Dado permissions to either grant you extra permissions; or do this for you.
- Each import source has a Remove link shown on the right hand side of the screen. Click on this link for the source you wish to remove.
