Using Target Audiences to send different versions of your Moment to different groups

Sometimes, you need to send slightly (or significantly) different versions of the same content to different employee groups.

For instance, maybe your new Flexible Working Policy is not applicable to some departments. You want to send full details of the policy to the departments affected; and merely notify other departments that this policy has been updated, but does not apply to them.

Dado makes it easy to send multiple versions of a Moment to different groups, using Target Audiences

How to set up a Target Audience

  • Click on the 'edit' link in the To section of your Moment
  • Next, click on 'Add New Audience'. This will open a sidebar in which you can define your Audience
  • Choose a name that will make it clear who's in this audience. For instance:
    • US People Managers
    • Engineers and Data Scientists
    • Marketing Interns – summer 2023 cohort
  • Now set the rules to define your Target Audience. For more advice, see the section below
    • Remember, you can preview which employees match the rules, to make sure you're defining the Audience you want – just click "Preview Matching Employees"

Defining your Target Audience using rules

Dado uses a rules-based system for defining Target Audiences, which gives you nearly limitless flexibility to make the Target Audiences you need.

Here are a few tips for defining the effective rules.

Target Audience logic can be a little tricky at first. If you'd ever like someone to double-check you've defined the Audience you want, then feel free to reach out to support@dadohr.com.

Target Audiences are mutually exclusive

Every employee will only be put into one Target Audience.

Specifically, they'll go into the first Target Audience whose rules they match.

Dado will assess Target Audience membership by running through the list of Audiences in the order they're displayed in your Moment. In the example shown below, Dado will do the following:

  • check if an employee matches the rules for "Marketing & Sales dept – Austin office"
    • if they match the rules, they are sent the Moment version for this Audience
  • if they don't match the rules for that Audience, check if they match the rules for "Marketing & Sales dept – NYC office"
    • if they match the rules, they are sent the Moment version for this Audience
  • if they don't match the rules for that Audience, check if they match the rules for "Marketing & Sales dept – remote"
    • if they match the rules, they are sent the Moment version for this Audience
  • if they don't match the rules for that Audience, they are sent the Moment version for "Everyone else"

When you define your Target Audience make sure the rules you define make the audiences mutually exclusive.

Which data fields you can use in your rules

You can define a rule using any data you've imported into Dado, with a couple of exceptions. You can't use the following fields in your rules:

  • personal or work email addresses (eg "Work Email is someone.inparticular@acme.com")
  • names (eg "First Name contains Jerry")

Match "any" versus Match "all"

You can choose between matching "all" of the rules you create, or "any" of them. This is the equivalent to using "and" versus "or".

Use match any when you'd use or:

Use match all when you'd use and:

You should also use match all when you're writing negative rules

Using rule groups

Rule groups enable you to use more complex logic when you're defining rules. They enable you to use both "match all" and "match any" together.

Customizing content for different Audiences

  • Go to the Content section of your Moment and click 'edit'. This will open up a window where you can create content

  • Each of your Target Audiences will have a separate tab in this window. Click on each tab to create custom content for each audience

  • You can also copy content across between audiences, so you don't have to start from scratch each time
    • Copying content adds the new content to what you already have; it doesn't replace it.

  • You can also use variables to insert personalized data about each recipient. Read more about this here.
  • Remember to save your content when you're finishing customizing.
