Personalizing Moment content for different recipients

Employees are more engaged and more likely to take action when they receive personalized messaging that's tailored to their situation. Moments makes it easy to achieve this in a scalable way, via two kinds of personalization.

Inserting employee data into your Moments content

It's easy to personalize the content of a Moment using 'variables'. Variables allow you to insert particular data you have about the recipient into the message. For instance, you could:

  • greet them by their first name
  • mention the name or email address of the relevant HR Business Partner
  • refer to their working location, department or team

How to use variables to insert employee data into your Moment

  1. First, import the relevant data into Dado
    • EG, if you want to refer to the employee's location, you will need to import Location data into Dado for each employee who'll receive your Moment
    • For instructions on how to do this, see our article on importing extra data about employees into Dado
    • Every data field you import into data will become a variable. The name of the column in your CSV will become the variable name.
  2. Open the Moment you wish to personalize and go to the Content section. Place your cursor at the point in the content where you wish to insert the variable.
  3. Click on the 'Text variable' link at the top right of the text or title field

  4. A new window will appear showing you all the variables you can insert
    • Remember, every data field you import will become a variable, and the column header text will become the variable name.
    • E.G. if your import CSV contains a column with 'HBBP email' as its header, then a variable called 'HRBP email' will be created.
  5. Select the variable you'd like to insert from this window. This will now be inserted into the text/title field as a variable code surrounded by curly brackets, e.g. {{ participant.department }}
  6. Check that the variable appears where and how you'd like it to, by looking at the preview in the central column:

When the Moment is sent, the colored badge shown in the preview will be replaced with the value of that variable for each user, shown in normal text. If Dado does not have any data for the variable you've selected for a recipient, the variable code will be shown instead:

Before scheduling the Moment, double-check that everyone due to receive it has data for the variables you've inserted. You can do this by checking on the Employees page.

Sending different versions of a Moment to different employees

As well as inserting variables into a Moment, you can also produce multiple versions of content to send to different employee groups. This is helpful in a range of situations:

  • You're organizing a social event, but the agenda and meeting-point vary for different teams
  • You want to send a message about an upcoming US national holiday, and non-US-based employees should receive different info than US-based employees

You can accomplish this by using Dado's Target Audience feature to create and send multiple versions of the same message. Here's how.

1. Create the Target Audiences

  • Click on the 'Edit' link in the To section of your Moment
  • By default, every Moment is addressed to all the employees you've imported into Dado
    • This is the "Everyone" Audience
  • To create a custom Audience, click on 'Add New Audience'
  • A side-bar will now appear, where you can name your audience, and define the rules that determine who will be a member of that Audience
  • For more help setting up Target Audiences, see this article or reach out to our friendly support team on help@dadohr.com

Target Audiences are mutually exclusive

That means each employee will only ever be included in ONE Target Audience. Bear this in mind when you're setting the rules for your Audiences.

2. Customize content for each Audience

  • Save your changes to the 'To' section, and go to the 'Content' section of your Moment
  • In this window, every Audience who'll receive the Moment appears as a different tab

  • You can create entirely different content for each Audience from scratch. Alternatively, you can create the first version of the content for one Audience, copy this content across to other Audiences, and edit it for each.
    • To do this, use the Copy Content feature. This appears in the right sidebar and the center of a blank preview area.
    • Copy Content adds the content to what you already have for this Audience, rather than replacing your existing content.
  • Don't forget to save your work when you're done.

3. If necessary, delete the 'Everyone Else' Target Audience

  • By default, every Moment is addressed to all the employees you've imported into Dado
    • This Audience is called 'Everyone'
  • If you add additional Audiences, another default Audience appears, called 'Everyone Else'
    • This is a fall-back Audience; it includes every employee you've imported into Dado who doesn't fit into the other Audiences you've created.
  • If you don't want anyone outside your custom Audiences to receive this Moment, go to the "To" section of your moment, and click the trash can item to delete the Everyone Else Audience.
