Automations: Slack
Contents
Pre-requisites for using Slack Automations
To use Slack Actions in Automations, you should first connect your Slack account under Organization → Integrations. Once that's complete, the Slack actions will be available in the Actions list of Automations. For more information, see the Setting up Slack Integration article.
If you'd like Dado to invite users to an existing, private channel, the Dado Slack Bot must be in that channel. For how to do this, see Instructions for adding Dado to a private channel.
'Invite to Channel' Action
The "Invite to Channel" Action is useful for automatically adding Participants or Supporting Actors to Slack channels. It's possible not only to invite people to existing channels but also to create new channels and invite users to them.
Remember: you can use Target Audiences to add different types of Participants to different channels. For instance, you could add people to office-related channels based on their location.
After dragging the Action to the main area, fill in the following information to activate:
- Who should be invited: You can choose any of the usual actors that can be assigned tasks, e.g. Participant (Personal Email), Participant (Work Email), Manager, etc. It's possible to add multiple people.
- Channel Type: Choose between Existing Channel or Create New Channel
- Existing Channel: When inviting users to existing channel, a list of the existing channels will be displayed. You can also type to find specific channels. Remember the Dado Slack bot must be a member of an existing channel before you can invite Participants to it using an Automation. Find out how to add the Dado bot to channels.
- Create New Channel: Create a brand new channel when this Automation is run.
Three further options can be set, if you select Create New Channel:
- Name Schema: You can include variables in your channel name to dynamically create channel names that are specific to cohorts, months, departments, locations, etc.
- Make Channel Private: Decide if this channel will be public or private. Important: once a channel is created as private, Slack does not allow it to become public.
- People to add on channel creation: Allows you to add other users to this channel. To find people, start typing an email and click it to confirm. We recommend you add yourself to new channels, especially if you are creating private channels. Otherwise you won't have a way to see what's happening in the channel.
Once everything is set up, simply save and you're done! Now every time a participant goes through the experience, the Automation will add them to the channels you specified.
